Pollution in our watershed
The Trinity River is the main body of water in the Trinity River watershed. It has been heavily polluted by the DFW metroplex. The polluted water flows down to Houston, where the residents there have to deal with and drink the polluted water. The maximum average concentration of chlorine in Texas is 100 milligrams per liter. When fourteen samples were taken from 1992 through 1997, they showed that the average concentration of chlorine was 127 milligram per liter. This shows how polluted the Trinity River is.
Pollution is caused by many things, but mostly by human factors such as farming practices, oil well leakages, dumping of wastes, improper sewage treatment, and improper brine disposal. Humans use many chemicals and pesticides in farming that pollute the river. Humans have oil wells that may leak and pollute the water. Humans are constantly dumping wastes and sewage into the Trinity River. Pollution can also occur naturally. Evaporation of salt water or runoff from naturally saline soil naturally pollute the river. Since there are so many causes of pollution, we need to find a strong solution.
